CleopatraCleopatra VII Philopator was the last active ruler of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt. As a member of the Ptolemaic dynasty, she was a descendant of its founder Ptolemy I Soter, a Macedonian Greek general and companion of Alexander the Great. After the death of Cleopatra, Egypt became a province of the Roman Empire, marking the end of the second to last Hellenistic state and the age that had lasted since the reign of Alexander. Her native language was Koine Greek, and she was the only Ptolemaic ruler to learn the Egyptian language.

The USC Trojans’ NCAA Tournament story began in 1940 under program icon Sam Barry. You might recall that we did a long series on Barry this past spring, when there were no college sports due to the pandemic.

Sam Barry was the head coach for all three main USC sports teams in 1941 — basketball, football and baseball. His imprint on USC sports is enormous and far-reaching. It is hard to imagine USC becoming what it is without him.

Barry built USC athletics on so many fronts, but if he was especially gifted in coaching a sport, it was basketball. At USC, Barry cultivated multiple Hall of Fame coaches such as Jack Gardner of Utah and Kansas State. He taught future Hall of Fame players such as Bill Sharman.

Barry gave USC basketball the program’s first Final Four in 1940.

In the eight-team 1940 NCAA Tournament, two schools which would become blue-bloods in college basketball — Indiana and Kansas — reached the Final Four and eventually met in the national championship game. However, several schools without a strong basketball reputation in a 21st-century context were part of that tournament. Rice, Duquesne, and Western Kentucky were part of the proceedings. So were USC and Colorado, who met in the round of eight.

Sam Barry also mentored Forrest Twogood, the coach who took the Trojans to their only other Final Four in 1954, four years after Barry died.

The Trojans’ best NCAA Tournament results came from 1939 through 1961, the first 23 years of the Big Dance. Since then, USC has struggled in March, but this season’s team will get its chance to make a statement in the 2021 NCAA Tournament.

Let’s go over USC’s March Madness catalog of results, beginning with the Trojans’ first NCAA Tournament appearance in 1940 under Sam Barry. USC didn’t get to play in the 2020 NCAA Tournament, so while the Trojans qualified for the event, there is no game associated with that particular postseason.
