Why Cincinnati Will Win

It’s not beautiful, but the Bearcats are doing what they’re supposed to over the first three games of the season.

Play great defense, control the clock, get the ground game going enough to be okay, and methodically take down wins.

The Bearcats are outstanding at converting on third downs; Tulsa isn’t.

They’re better at controlling the tempo and they’re going to be able to grind the game down to its level. Tulsa defense has been okay, but has to rely on takeaways – it came up with five in the first two games.

However …

Why Tulsa Will Win

Cincinnati has had a few issues with turnovers, giving it up seven times in the first three games including four in the win over USF.

The Golden Hurricane defense might not be a brick wall, but it’s amazing at getting into the backfield, screwing up Oklahoma State with 14 tackles for loss and generating ten against UCF. The UC offensive line might be strong, but it’s about to get hit from all sides.

Tulsa’s secondary has been fine, the run defense has been great, and the offense has been okay considering the competition in the first two games. And …

What’s Going To Happen

If you’re good enough to beat UCF on the road, you’re good enough to at least throw a hell of a scare into a Cincinnati team that doesn’t usually put up enough points to put games away early

Tulsa is dangerous, it has the defense to be a bother, and this should be a low-scoring battle that comes down to who can control the lines. Cincinnati should do a better job of it – the defense is about to rise up – but it’s going to be the antithesis to all the high-powered shootouts happening throughout college football.

Cincinnati Vs Tulsa Predictions

Prediction

The Tulsa Golden Hurricane (2-4) head to Ohio this weekend for an American Athletic Conference clash with the #21 overall Cincinnati Bearcats (5-1). Kickoff is set for 3:30 PM EST on October 19th at Nippert Stadium and the game will be televised on ESPNU.

Taking a look at the Week 8 college football odds, Cincinnati opened as an 16-point home favorite earlier this week. The spread has increased by a full point after early betting, as the Bearcats are currently listed at -17. The total for the game is sitting at 49 points.

Vegas Betting Preview & Game Odds: Cincinnati vs Tulsa

Tulsa lost their second straight game last weekend, falling 45-17 at home against Navy to drop to 2-4 on the season overall. The Golden Hurricane gave up four touchdowns in the first half and never recovered, getting outscored by the Midshipmen again over the final two quarters. QB Zach Smith went 23/49 for 254 yards and a touchdown through the air while Shamari Brooks rushed for 55 yards on 12 carries on the ground. T.K Wilkerson caught the only touchdown pass of the game for Tulsa, finding the end zone on a 12-yard strike from Smith. As a whole, the offense gained over 300 total yards and scored two touchdowns in a losing cause.

The Golden Hurricane defense had a poor outing against Navy, giving up well over 400 total yards of offense and six touchdowns. Tulsa definitely had no answers defensively for Midshipmen RB Malcolm Perry, who racked up 218 rushing yards and three touchdowns on a game-high 20 carries.

Cincinnati has now won five out of their first six games after beating Houston 38-23 on the road last weekend to move to 5-1 on the season overall. The Bearcats jumped out to a 21-10 lead in the first half and didn’t look back, scoring 17 points in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach for good. QB Desmond Ridder was 14/24 for 263 yards and three passing touchdowns while also adding 50 yards and a rushing touchdown on the ground. Rashad Medaris led the way for the receiving corps, exploding for 121 yards and a touchdown on only three receptions. Overall, Cincinnati generated just under 400 total yards of offense and scored four touchdowns in the double-digit victory.

The Bearcats played pretty average defensively in Week 7, giving up well over 400 total yards of offense and three touchdowns. However, Cincinnati also recorded three interceptions and kept the Cougars out of the end zone on the ground all game long.

NCAA Football Betting Predictions & Free Pick: Cincinnati -17

I think that the Bearcats currently offer the best value in this particular matchup, as they should have a pretty easy time getting past Tulsa on Saturday afternoon – especially playing at home. Cincinnati has only lost one game so far this season and have beaten their opponents by at least two touchdowns in three out of their past four games. On the other side, the Golden Hurricane have lost three out of their last four games overall by at least a touchdown. While their offense has played fairly well, they have really struggled on the other side of the ball through their first six games. In fact, Tulsa has given up 149 points over their last four outings combined – an average of over 37 points against per game.

The Bearcats have fared well against the spread in this matchup as of late, going 2-1-1 ATS over their last four meetings with Tulsa. Cincinnati is also a rock-solid 5-1 ATS through their first six games of the season and 4-2 against the spread of their past six meetings with American Athletic Conference opponents. The Golden Hurricane have been brutal on the road in recent years, going a dreadful 1-14 outright in their last 15 games away from H.A. Chapman Stadium. I’m going to lay the 17 points and roll with the home favorite to cover the spread in this AAC clash – give me the Bearcats!
